Open Call Residencies for Beyond Matter

The project Beyond Matter is inviting European artists to apply until 30 April 2021 for one of three production residencies taking place in Karlsruhe, Tallinn and Tirana between 1 September to 31 October 2021 and 1 May to 30 June 2022.

Conceived are these residencies within the framework of Beyond Matter called 'Cultural Heritage on the Verge of Virtual Reality'. The residents will develop an artistic production or a theoretical concept for a production on-site with the question of the meaning of virtual reality and its use in the field of art always in mind.

The selected artists will get a fully funded residency including travel expenses, accommodation, a stipend and production costs. Through the different travel restrictions resulting due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the physical stay may get postponed. But the ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe is also offering the possibility with an online project that does not need to be implemented on-site.

Beyond Matter is an international, collaborative, practice-based research and,a joint long-term project by the Tallinn Art HallTirana Art Lab - Center for Contemporary Art and the ZKM | Center for Art and Media.  The project takes cultural heritage and culture in development to the verge of virtual reality. It does this by reflecting on the virtual condition with a specific emphasis on its spatial aspects in art production, curating, and mediation via numerous activities and formats, including the digital revival of selected past landmark exhibitions, art and archival exhibitions, conferences, artist residency programs, an online platform, and publications, from 2019 to 2023.
